About our squirrels... The Woodland in the City squirrels are 4 foot high and located throughout the city of Olean. The squirrel was designed under the guidance of Mark Barta of Olean, Dal-tile mosaic tile artist and committee member of Woodland in the City. The fiberglass form was then fabricated by Cowpainters, LLC of Chicago, IL. Local artists were chosen by the sponsors of the squirrels and collectively, they created a unique theme and personality for each squirrel. Why a squirrel? Oleanders will agree, many childhood days were spent at Oak Hill Park and Lincoln Park feeding the squirrels. Our city is a playground for the scampering critters and we are their audience! The black squirrel population has thrived and as many visitors will tell you, their dusky coat is a rare site to see. We surmised the squirrels were a fitting tribute to our fair city of beautiful trees, parks and mountains with a touch of whimsy to appeal to the young and young at heart. We hope you enjoy our creative squirrels and the beauty of the city that surrounds them.
